An unpublished Shakespeare play, never before performed in France, is a real event. Written around 1593, it took several centuries for its authorship to finally be recognized.
KING EDWARD. – This night will scarcely suffice to recount / The folly of this siege against faithful love / Before the sun gilds the eastern sky / We shall awaken him with our martial song.
This is a chivalrous and performative play about love and war, combining plots and styles halfway between the mysteries of the Middle Ages and the depth of Elizabethan theater. It is the dream encounter between Marlowe and Shakespeare. It even touches on a historical scandal, the Salic law, which prevented women from inheriting the crown. It's a huge challenge and an immense playground for Cédric Gourmelon and his passionate troupe. Together, they promise us a spectacular show with battle scenes worthy of a peplum film, as well as fiery declarations of love. How else could we recount the adventures of this warlike and conquering king consumed by his desires? Will Edward III be able to unite the two crowns of France and England without the support of the Scots? Who will prevent him from loving without delay and without restraint? Will the Countess of Salisbury consent to the fury of his desire?

The actors embody all the protagonists in this struggle for the three crowns of England, France, and Scotland. Vincent Guédon plays an extraordinary Edward, who goes from being the countess's mad lover to the solemn victor welcoming his son home to Calais as a hero after his victory at Poitiers. He is as funny as a lover unable to express how beautiful his beloved is as he is terrifying in the scene where he promises that the bones of the French nobility will serve as pillars for his son's catafalque. Opposite him in the first two acts, the luminous Fanny Kervarec, moving and intense as the Countess of Salisbury, is a revelation! Zakary Bairi, Laurent Barbot, Jessim Belfar, Vladislav Botnaru, Guillaume Cantillon, Victor Hugo Dos Santos Pereira, Manon Guilluy, and Christophe Ratandra complete this cast with their outstanding talent and astonishing ease.
Long forgotten, this early play, finally staged in France, reveals a Shakespeare bursting with audacity. Cédric Gourmelon has created a vibrant rediscovery, in which the Hundred Years' War is the backdrop for an impossible love story, carried by the intensity of Vincent Guédon and Fanny Kervarec.
